Erzbergbahn - railway form Eisenerz to Vordernberg

The steepest standard gauge railway in the European Union

In the year 1891 as cogwheel railway for the purpose of ore transport opened and as such till 1978 with steam engine operated, counts the Erzbergbahn definitely to the most beauftiful railway lines in Europe. Today it is volunteered by the association Verein Erzbergbahn with a lot of engagement and serves as a railroad museum for railway friends and tourist purposes.

The route of the Erzbergbahn

The route is unique: The railway winds around the Erzberg with an increase up to 71 per thousand, passes through a 1.4 km tunnel and reaches Präbichl station, the highest railway station in Styria (1204 m sea level). Railway friends who want to enjoy a ride with the railbus gets offered a wonderful view of the Styrian Erzberg and the Eisenerzer Alps.

Originally, the Erzbergbahn was built as a cog railway. Today it is the steepest standard gauge railway in the European Union. For the tourist traffic historical diesel railcars from the make 5081.500 are being used.

From June till September the rail buses operate every Sunday between Vordernberg Market and railway station Erzberg. On only one ride before noon and afternoon you have the opportunity to switch to a „Hauly“ from adventure Erzberg and combine the drive with a panoramic drive on the Erzberg Terrace.
